Rayleigh-bénard convection

چکیده
This paper presents a physicist’s approach to Rayleigh-Bbnard convection widely illustrated with experimental results. The basis of the mechanism of the instability is simply presented with physical reasons for the existence of a critical threshold. A detailed examination of the spatial organization is made with discussion of ordered and disordered structures. Furthermore it is shown that the measurements of the local velocity give a good quantitative description of the convective state. A complete parallel between the Rayleigh-BBnard convection near onset and a critical phenomenon is given in the framework of a mean field approach, including both spatial as well as temporal effects. NonBoussinesq convection is presented as symmetry breaking, changing the second order transition into a (partially) first order transition. The last section is devoted to the ever present but still not completely understood question of the dynamics of the convective pattern; the importance of the existence and motion of defects is pointed out. Finally, a tentative and provisional survey is made of two open questions: the wavenumber selection and the approach of turbulence in large aspect ratio cells.

Infinite Prandtl Number Limit of Rayleigh-Bénard Convection
We rigorously justify the infinite Prandtl number model of convection as the limit of the Boussinesq approximation to the Rayleigh-Bénard convection as the Prandtl number approaches infinity. This is a singular limit problem involving an initial layer.
متن کاملApproximation of the Stationary Statistical Properties of the Dynamical System Generated by the Two-dimensional Rayleigh-bénard Convection Problem
In this article we consider a temporal linear semiimplicit approximation of the two-dimensional Rayleigh-Bénard convection problem. We prove that the stationary statistical properties of this linear semi-implicit scheme converge to those of the 2D Rayleigh-Bénard problem as the time step approaches zero.
متن کاملRecent Developments in Rayleigh-Bénard Convection
This review summarizes results for Rayleigh-Bénard convection that have been obtained over the past decade or so. It concentrates on convection in compressed gases and gas mixtures with Prandtl numbers near one and smaller. In addition to the classical problem of a horizontal stationary fluid layer heated from below, it also briefly covers convection in such a layer with rotation about a vertic...
متن کاملBuoyancy statistics in moist turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection
We study shallow moist Rayleigh–Bénard convection in the Boussinesq approximation in three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The thermodynamics of phase changes is approximated by a piecewise linear equation of state close to the phase boundary. The impact of phase changes on the turbulent fluctuations and the transfer of buoyancy through the layer is discussed as a function of the Rayl...
متن کاملOn the Principle of Exchange of Stabilities in Rayleigh-Bénard Convection, II - No-slip Boundary Conditions
Rayleigh-Bénard convection with internal heat sources and a variable gravity field is treated with no-slip boundary conditions. It is proved that the principle of exchange of stabilities holds at all Prandtl numbers, as long as the gravity field and the integral of the heat sources both have the same sign. The proof is based on the idea of a positive operator, and uses the positivity properties...
متن کاملHeat transfer and large scale dynamics in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection
The progress in our understanding of several aspects of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection is reviewed. The focus is on the question of how the Nusselt number and the Reynolds number depend on the Rayleigh number Ra and the Prandtl number Pr, and on how the thicknesses of the thermal and the kinetic boundary layers scale with Ra and Pr. Non-Oberbeck-Boussinesq effects and the dynamics of the ...
